Vietnam’s Party leader To Lam leaves for working trip to US, Cuba

Vietnam’s Party General Secretary and President To Lam left Hanoi for New York on Saturday morning to attend United Nations events, work in the U.S. and then visit Cuba.

The Vietnamese leader will attend the U.N. Summit of the Future and the 79th session of the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA 79) in New York on Sept. 22 and 23, speaking at the summit and at high-level general discussion session of the U.N. General Assembly.

The summit aims to bolster the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and other goals related to the climate and unifying solutions for global challenges.

One the sidelines of the event, Lam is expected to have bilateral meetings, attend events, meet with leaders of the U.S. government, parliament, parties and heads of departments.

The U.S. is Vietnam’s second largest commercial partner. Last year, trade turnover between the two countries reached US$111 billion, according to the Vietnam Customs.

Lam’s working visit to the U.S. coincides with the first anniversary of the two countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership and their preparations for the celebration of the 30th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties in 2025.

After the U.S., Lam and his wife will pay a state visit to Cuba at the invitation of First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and his wife.

He is expected to hold talks with the Cuba’s top leader, meet with National Assembly Chairman Esteban Lazo Hernandez and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, greet General Raul Castro Ruz and attend other foreign affairs activities.

Vietnam and Cuba established diplomatic relations on Dec. 2, 1960. The countries cooperate on rice supply, food production development, health care and pharmaceuticals. Vietnam is Cuba’s second largest Asian trade partner, behind China, and the largest Asian investor in Cuba.

His working trip to the two countries is scheduled to wrap up on Sept. 27.
