Vikrant Massey: Vikrant Massey angry over ‘illegal’ service charge of the restaurant, complains to the police; Know what your rights are

Vikrant Massey is known for his excellent acting as well as for speaking openly on the issues of the common man. Recently, the ’12th Fail’ fame actor has raised an issue which has troubled all of us at some point or the other. Yes, we are talking about the ‘Service Charge’ collected in restaurants. Vikrant has raised a hue and cry against this extortion by sharing the bill of a restaurant on social media, after which a new debate has started on the internet.

Actor got angry after seeing the bill, tagged CM and police

Actually, Vikrant Massey had recently gone to a restaurant to eat food. When the bill arrived on his table, it had ‘service charge’ attached to it. The actor took a photo of this bill without any delay and shared it on his Instagram story. Citing government rules, he described it as completely “illegal”. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, Vikrant also tagged Maharashtra Chief Minister’s Office (@cmomaharashtra_), Mumbai Police (@mumbaipolice) and Customs Department (@cbicindia) in his post. However, the surprising thing was that after some time he deleted his story. But by then the screenshots of his post had gone viral on social media.

Got full support from public on social media

As soon as this post of Vikrant went viral, the general public also started expressing their pain. On social media, netizens shared their personal experiences of the high-handedness of restaurants. Many users say that restaurant owners extort service charges from customers on the pretext of menu cards being written in big letters. People termed it as ‘forced tipping’ and said that tipping should be entirely up to the customer and not be forced into the bill.

What do government rules say on service charge?

If you also go to a restaurant, you must know your rights. As per the strict guidelines of ‘Central Consumer Protection Authority’ (CCPA):

No restaurant or hotel can add default service charge to your food bill as per its wish.

Paying service charge is completely optional for the customer, it is not a mandatory tax.

The customer cannot be misled in any way by adding it along with other taxes in the bill.

If you do not want to pay service charge, the restaurant staff cannot force you to do so.
