Vinesh Phogat failed to qualify for the Asian Games, suffered a crushing defeat in the semi-finals of the women’s 53 kg category trials.

Even after getting permission for the trial from the Supreme Court, wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disappointed. She failed to qualify for the Asian Games 2026.

Vinesh, 31, lost to Meenakshi Goyat in the semi-finals of the 53 kg category and thus failed to secure her place in the upcoming Asian Games.

Vinesh got a crushing defeat in the trials

Vinesh lost this match 4-6. The entire trials held on Saturday were full of turmoil, as Vinesh had to face many difficulties. Their quarter-final match at the Indira Gandhi International Stadium turned into a heated argument between the coaches and Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) officials. Earlier, Vinesh had displayed her experience and skills by defeating Nishu and entered the semi-finals. After an easy 7-1 win against Jyoti, Vinesh had to face a tough fight against her opponent in the quarter-finals.

Temper flared up during the match

Nishu took a 5-0 lead in the first period and almost pinned Vinesh, but Vinesh somehow escaped. After this the match became emotionally charged, with both players fuming over technical challenges and screen malfunction. These delays helped Vinesh to regain her rhythm. At one time the score was 6-6, and then Nishu attempted a takedown but he was not given points. Nishu’s coach also challenged the decision, but he lost and Vinesh walked off the mat with a sigh of relief.

The day had started on a disappointing note for Vinesh as she was earlier told that she would be able to compete only in the 50 kg category as she had competed in the same weight category in her previous four international events including the Paris Olympics. After this, Vinesh objected to this decision and accused WFI of discrimination and said that WFI has refused to give her the opportunity to compete in the category of her choice.
