Vinesh Phogat Loses In Asian Games Qualifiers; ‘I Have Not Failed… I Am Fighting Whole System’

New Delhi: Vinesh Phogat’s valiant effort to make an international comeback ended after she lost 4-6 in a gruelling 53 kg semifinal bout in the Asian Games selection trials.

However, the disappointment did not deflate Vinesh’s spirit.

Three-time Olympian Vinesh, the only Indian female wrestler to have won gold at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, asserted that her victory lay in defying a system that tried to keep her away and stop her from returning to elite competition 10 months after she became a mother.

The 31-year-old Vinesh, who retired after being disqualified from the 2024 Paris Olympics for being overweight at the weigh-in before the final bout, announced her return in December 2025 with an eye on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The upcoming Asian Games in Japan was her first test, but Vinesh refused to label her semifinal exit a setback.

“I have not failed at all. I am fighting the whole system and I am still standing with pride on the mat again. They wanted to stop me from returning, but I am standing here. I am proud of what I have achieved in these 10 months since my son was born, competing against the younger generation. I hope I can inspire my son and many women wrestlers,” said Vinesh, who had to win a court battle to compete in the qualifiers after the Wrestling Federation of India denied her entry.

“When I should have been focusing on my recovery and preparation, I was arguing with officials. They gave me a letter saying I could compete only in 50 kg. It was mental harassment. I know the system will continue to create challenges, but I hope that through hard work I can leave it behind,” said Vinesh after her loss.

Accepting her semifinal defeat after winning her first bout, she conceded that fitness and endurance were key issues.

“I needed more match practice after nearly two years away. But I am motivated. I know I can beat these younger girls. I still have that courage and belief, and I have absolutely come back to the mat for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” Vinesh said with confidence.
