New Delhi12 December. Vinesh Phogat, one of the veteran wrestlers of the country, who has entered politics after retiring from wrestling, said on Friday that her zeal and enthusiasm are still the same as before and she will break her retirement and return to the mat to win an Olympic medal once again in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
It is noteworthy that 31-year-old Phogat had distanced herself from sports after the disappointment in the Paris Olympic Games last year. At the Paris Olympics, she was disqualified just before the gold medal match in the women’s 50 kg category for being 100 grams more than the prescribed weight limit. He had jointly demanded the award of silver medal in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), but the decision was not changed, due to which he announced his retirement and entered politics. She was elected MLA from Julana constituency of Haryana on Congress ticket.
‘I still like this sport, I still want to compete’,
Vinesh said in a post released on social media platform X, ‘People kept asking me whether my journey had ended in Paris itself. For a long time I didn’t have the answer. I needed to stay away from the mat, away from pressure, away from expectations, even my own ambitions. For the first time in many years I breathed a sigh of relief.
He said, ‘I took time to understand the importance of my journey. The peaks, the moments of heartbreak, my sacrifices and the versions of me the world has never seen. Somewhere in that introspection, I realized the truth that I still loved the game. I still want to compete.
Will prepare for Los Angeles Olympics
Vinesh, who became the mother of a son in July this year, said, ‘In that silence, I realized something which I had forgotten. It was that ‘that passion has never ended.’ It was merely relegated to the background due to fatigue and noise. Discipline, routine, struggle, all these are present within me. No matter how far I go, a part of me always remains on the mat.
,my son is my biggest inspiration,
Vinesh said that she will start her journey for the Los Angeles Olympics with new enthusiasm and passion and with her son. She said, ‘That is why I am present here today and with full fearlessness and determination I am moving towards the Los Angeles Olympics. This time I am not alone. My son is also joining my team. He is my biggest inspiration. He is my little cheerleader in this journey to Los Angeles Olympics.
It is noteworthy that Vinesh had already created history by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to reach the gold medal match in Paris Olympics. Vinesh, a three-time Olympian, has won gold medals in both the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.
