Vinesh Phogat announces return to wrestling, will participate in 2028 LA Olympics
Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the Olympic final in wrestling at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

I needed to get away from the mat, from the pressure, from expectations, even from my dreams. For the first time in years, I allowed myself to breathe. I took time to understand the burden of my journey – the ups and downs, the heartbreaks, the sacrifices, the versions of me the world never saw. And somewhere in that thinking, I found the truth, I still love this game. I still want to compete.
He further wrote in that silence I found something which I had forgotten ‘fire never ends’. It was just buried under fatigue and noise. Discipline, routine, fight… it’s all in my system. No matter how far I moved, a part of me remained on the mat. So here I am, stepping back toward LA28 with a heart that is fearless and a spirit that refuses to bow down. And this time I’m not walking alone, my son is joining my team, my biggest inspiration, my little cheerleader on this path to the LA Olympics.”
Vinesh Phogat was very close to creating history in wrestling at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the Olympic final. Looking at his form, there were speculations that he would win gold, but a few hours before the final, his weight was found to be 100 grams more. Due to this he was thrown out of the competition.
Vinesh had announced her retirement from wrestling 17 hours after being disqualified. He had written in a post on The news of Vinesh’s disqualification came on 7 August 2024 at around 12 noon.
Vinesh was the first Indian female wrestler to reach the Olympic finals.
Vinesh became the first Indian female wrestler to reach the final of 50 kg wrestling Olympics by winning 3 matches. She defeated Cuban wrestler Guzman Lopez in the semi-finals, Oksana Livach of Ukraine in the quarterfinals and world champion Yui Susaki of Japan 3-2 in the pre-quarterfinals.
Paris 2024 Olympics was the third Olympics for Vinesh Phogat
The 2024 Paris Olympics was Vinesh Phogat’s third Olympics. She was out of the competition in the 2016 Rio Olympics due to injury. After this, she lost in the quarterfinals in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Vinesh had not lost any of her matches in the Paris Olympics and after reaching the finals, her medal was considered certain. But, before the final, he was disqualified as his weight was found to be 100 grams more.
