The pain and retirement of Paris 2024

Vinesh Phogat was the first Indian female wrestler to reach the wrestling final at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Their performance was excellent and their chances of winning the gold medal were high. But, a few hours before the final match, his weight was found to be only 100 grams more, due to which he was eliminated from the competition.

This incident left Vinesh emotionally shattered and she immediately announced her retirement from the entire wrestling career. At this time Vinesh distanced herself from sports and the expectations of the world.

Announcement of withdrawal after 18 months

During the announcement of her comeback, Vinesh shared an emotional post on social media. He wrote that in the last one and a half year, he questioned himself and tried to understand his journey by staying away from sports. Vinesh said,

‘People kept asking if Paris was the end of me. I had no answer for a long time. I needed to stay away from the mat, away from pressure, away from expectations and also away from my own ambitions. But now I again felt the same fire which had never been extinguished.

He mentioned the ups and downs of his journey, the sacrifices and those moments which the world has never seen. This thought inspired him to return to wrestling.

comeback after becoming a mother

Vinesh Phogat will be among the few Indian players who returned to the game after becoming a mother. Vinesh gave birth to a son in 2025. He said,

‘Discipline, routine, fight… all this was always within me. No matter how far I went, a part of me always remained on the mat. Now I am again moving towards Los Angeles Olympics. This time I am not alone, my son is also included in my team, my biggest motivation and little cheerleader.

This comeback of Vinesh shows that becoming a mother cannot be a hindrance in a player’s career, but it can also give new inspiration and strength.
