Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli, admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Thane district, developed fever on Tuesday but his condition is stable, doctors treating him said on Tuesday. Kambli (52) is responding to treatment for urinary tract infection for which he was admitted to Aakriti Hospital near Bhiwandi city on Saturday (December 21), Dr Vivek Trivedi told PTI.
Trivedi is leading the medical team that is monitoring the health of the former cricketer. He said doctors were planning to conduct an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) on the former Indian batsman, but since he has developed fever, a decision on the non-invasive medical procedure will be taken later.
Trivedi said that the MRI procedure became necessary after clots were found in his brain after several medical tests conducted earlier. He said Kambli is likely to be taken out of the ICU in a day or two and discharged after about four days.
He said the former Mumbai cricketer's condition was critical four days ago when he had a urinary infection and pus had accumulated in his bladder. The pus was drained upon hospitalization. Trivedi said that staying at home for a few more days could have made his situation more complicated.
He said that when he was brought to the hospital, his blood pressure was also fluctuating. The doctor said that at present his condition is stable. “His condition will be closely monitored for the next 24 hours and a decision will be taken to move him out of the ICU,” he said. Meanwhile, the Shrikant Shinde Foundation, run by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his MP son, has stepped in to help Kambli.
An official release issued by the Deputy Chief Minister's office in Thane on Tuesday night said that on the instructions of Eknath Shinde, his Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Mangesh Chiwte visited the hospital to inquire about the health condition of the former cricketer. Chiwate also contacted the hospital's medical staff to ensure that Kambli received the best possible care during his treatment. Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde, son of Eknath Shinde, announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for Kambli. The release said that this assistance will be provided through Dr. Shrikant Shinde Foundation next week.
Furthermore, according to OSD Chiwte, Shrikant Shinde has assured Kambli and his family of more assistance in the coming days. Kambli expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the sensitive leadership of the state, especially Eknath Shinde, who is the MLA from Thane district, and Shrikant Shinde for their support and concern. The former cricketer also expressed his desire to personally meet the Deputy Chief Minister to thank him for the support given in his time of need, the release said. It said that Eknath and Shrikant Shinde would soon visit him in the hospital.
