Violation of traffic rules at IGI Airport will result in heavy penalty, 24-hour surveillance with hi-tech cameras; E-challan will reach home

A major step has been taken towards modernizing and tightening the traffic system in the Indira Gandhi International Airport area of the national capital. In view of the increasing vehicular pressure around the airport and frequent traffic rule violations, DIAL and Delhi Traffic Police have jointly implemented a hi-tech monitoring system. Under the new system, state-of-the-art AI-enabled cameras have been installed on the airport premises and the main roads connected to it, which will keep an eye on activities like overspeeding, driving in the wrong lane, parking in no-parking, violation of seat belt and helmet rules, red light jumping.

Now the drivers breaking the rules will be immediately identified through cameras and an e-challan will be sent directly to their address based on the vehicle number. Officials say that the purpose of this system is not only to issue challans, but also to increase traffic discipline in the airport area and ease the movement of passengers. Under the new traffic monitoring system, state-of-the-art ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras have been installed at sensitive and busy areas of the airport. At present, 14 high-definition cameras have been activated, which will scan the number plates of vehicles in real time and identify traffic rule violations. Apart from this, a plan has also been prepared to install 35 additional cameras in the coming time. According to officials, after this expansion, monitoring of the airport road network will become stronger and more effective than before.

Vehicle will be identified immediately

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras installed in the Indira Gandhi International Airport area will now monitor traffic rules in a completely technology-based manner. These hi-tech cameras will scan the number plate of every vehicle passing on the road in a few seconds and create a digital record of it. The special thing about this technology is that the drivers breaking the traffic rules will be identified automatically and for this the presence of policemen on the spot will not be necessary. The cameras themselves will record the vehicle’s image, number plate and information related to rule violations and connect it directly to the traffic control system. After this, the process of issuing e-challan will automatically start in the name of the concerned vehicle owner.

Through the new monitoring system, violations like speeding, driving in the wrong direction, illegal parking, jumping red light, crossing the stop line, driving without helmet and not wearing seat belt will be kept under strict vigil. Officials say that this smart system will improve traffic discipline in the airport area and it will be possible to take immediate action against those who break the rules.

Smart traffic monitoring system has been activated at many important and highly busy locations of the airport. These mainly include Central Spine Road, Cargo Terminal area, Gauri, Center Hotel Junction, Aerocity, Airport Police Station and Terminal-1 exit route. According to officials, all these areas are considered extremely sensitive from traffic point of view, where a large number of private vehicles, taxis, cabs and commercial vehicles move daily. For this reason, there are frequent complaints of traffic jams, illegal parking and rule violations.

E-challan process will be completely technology based

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) cameras installed in the new system will automatically record images and important information of vehicles breaking traffic rules. The cameras will scan the number plate of the vehicle and generate its digital data, which will directly reach the server of Delhi Traffic Police. After this, the traffic police officers will check and verify the recorded footage and data. If the case is found to be in the category of rule violation under the Motor Vehicles Act, an e-challan will be issued immediately in the name of the concerned vehicle owner.

Officials believe that through ANPR cameras and digital e-challan system, traffic discipline in the airport area will be much stronger than before. With this technical system, it will be possible to effectively control violations like speeding, driving in the wrong direction, illegal parking and red light jumping. According to officials, constant monitoring and prompt action is expected to reduce road accidents. Besides, this system will also play an important role in controlling unnecessary movement of vehicles around the airport.
