On 12 December, masked assailants shot at Hadi while leaving a mosque in Dhaka or while campaigning. His condition became critical after being shot in the head. First he was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, then shifted to a private hospital for better treatment. As his condition worsened, he was taken by air ambulance to the Neurosurgical ICU of Singapore General Hospital on 15 December. If media reports are to be believed, as soon as Hadi’s death was confirmed, thousands of protesters gathered at Shahbagh intersection in Dhaka. Angry people attacked, vandalized and set on fire the offices of leading newspapers ‘Daily Star’ and ‘Prothom Alo’. At many places, properties belonging to Awami League were targeted. In some reports, anti-India slogans were also raised and stones were pelted at the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chittagong.
