Violence flares up again in Manipur, 2 Kukis killed, 21 Naga hostages released
Tension has increased once again in Manipur. Information about violence came to light yesterday in Ukhrul district of the state. People of Kuki community had taken hostage 21 people of Naga community. Apart from this, two people of Kuki community were missing. The state administration was keeping an eye on these situations and efforts were being made to improve the situation. Now information is coming out that bodies of two missing people of Kuki community have been found. These bodies were found at a time when the Kuki community had safely released 21 Naga community people held hostage. After this, security agencies and administration have become alert.
According to media reports, both the people of Kuki community had gone missing on Wednesday and their bodies were found in the hilly Iware on Thursday. Meanwhile, the administration freed 21 Naga people taken hostage. Manipur Chief Minister told the Assembly during the budget session that the hostages have been rescued and the case has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for investigation. However, the discovery of two dead bodies has once again made the situation serious in Manipur, which was already facing tension.

Tension increased in the area
According to the information, two people resident of Thawai Kuki village of Ukhrul district were allegedly kidnapped on Wednesday. They were identified as Thengin Baite and Thangboimang Khongsai. According to reports, both of them had gone to repair the water pipeline near their village, during which they went missing. Later their bodies were found in the hilly area. After this incident, security has been increased in the area and the administration is keeping an eye on the situation.
21 Nagas were taken hostage
People of Naga community were passing through Kuki dominated areas in 3 different vehicles. As soon as the vehicle stopped at Thawai Kuki village in Shangkai area, some people from the Kuki community stopped the vehicle and took them hostage. Women and children were also among those taken hostage. This news once again created tension in the state.
This dispute started over opium cultivation. . Some people of the Naga community had started a campaign against opium cultivation. A Kuki farmer was caught by people of Naga community. In response, people of Kuki community took people of Naga community hostage.
Hostages released with the help of administration
The news of 21 Naga people being taken hostage created a stir in the state. Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh has expressed deep concern over this incident. He directed senior police and administration officials to free the hostages as soon as possible and keep the situation under control in the district. After this, with the efforts of the administration and many social organizations, all 21 hostages were released.
Tension between Tangkhul Naga community and Kuki community
Fresh tension has arisen between people of the dominant Naga community, Tangkhul, and the Kuki community. People of Shangkai village have alleged that ‘Tangkhul Volunteers’ first opened fire on the Kuki farmers, injuring one person and two missing. The Naga community is accused of firing and taking hostage the people of the Kuki community. Since then there was tension in the area.

Ethnic conflict in Manipur
Manipur has been burning in the fire of ethnic conflict for the last few years. So far, more than a hundred people have died in the violence that started between the Meitei and Kuki communities in May 2023 and about 60 thousand people have been forced to leave their homes. This caste violence is not calming down yet. Despite all the security arrangements, incidents of tension have come to light several times in the state. Now the situation in the state has become more complicated with the emergence of a new dispute between the Kuki and Naga communities in Ukhrul. Considering the seriousness of this matter, the government may hand over its investigation to the National Investigation Agency. The police have registered a case of murder and started investigation.
