Violence in Bangladesh: Police attacked in Pabna amid talk of Sheikh Hasina’s return

New Delhi: Amid reports of the possible return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh, violence has been reported from Pabna district. There was a clash between police and local people in Sujanagar on Thursday morning. It is alleged that the workers of the banned Awami League gathered a crowd by making announcement through loudspeaker and attacked the police team.

Raids after football match, violence erupts again   

According to Sujanagar police station, two patrol parties had raided Mathurapur area. Police claim that some Awami League leaders and workers were planning sabotage during the Football World Cup match. Police detained 10 to 12 people in the raid. After this, people were called by making an announcement through the loudspeaker of the mosque.

It is alleged that the gathered crowd attacked the police team. During this, two police vehicles were vandalized and the detained people were freed. Sujanagar police station in-charge Muzaffar Hussain and constable Sabuj Hussain were injured in this clash. Both were given first aid in the local private hospital.

Awami League leader denied the allegations   

Police also accused Sujanagar Upazila Awami League president Abdul Wahab of involvement in the attack. But Wahab rejected all these allegations. He said that due to fear of arrest, he is already out of the district and cannot go to the area because of the police.

According to Wahab, the youth of the village had organized a program to eat khichdi after watching the football match at night. Meanwhile, the police arrived and took away many people. As soon as the news spread, local people, including women, came out of their homes and rescued those detained.

Case under anti-terrorism law   

Pabna Superintendent of Police Sufi Ullah said that separate cases are being registered under sections of attack on police and anti-terrorism law. Both the injured policemen are undergoing treatment. The SP said that the people involved in the incident are being identified.

Further action will be taken on the basis of video and statements of witnesses. Investigation of the entire matter is going on. It is noteworthy that after the speculations about Sheikh Hasina’s return to the country, the stir among Awami League workers in Bangladesh has intensified. Meanwhile, this incident in Pabna can increase tension.
