Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s ‘unboxing’ ceremony goes viral during INDvsNZ ODI series
In a scene that felt more like a high-end product launch than a cricket match, Indian legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were at the center of a bizarre yet viral “unboxing” ceremony.
The event took place during the mid-innings break of the first ODI between India and New Zealand at the newly inaugurated Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara.
The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) decided to honor the two stalwarts in a way social media is calling “peak entertainment.” Organizers placed a large wooden cupboard decorated with life-size posters of the duo near the boundary.
To the bewilderment of the 35,000 fans in attendance, Kohli and Rohit were ushered inside the box. When their names were announced, the doors swung open and the legends “stepped out of the closet” to thunderous cheers.
The quirky stunt left both players visibly amused. Report from the ground noted that the duo could not stop laughing as they signed their own life-sized photos on the box. In the presence of ICC Chairman Jay Shah and BCCI officials, the atmosphere was lighthearted.
Fans on X (formerly Twitter) quickly turned the moment into a meme with many joking that “they really fit Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli inside a box” and wondering “what they would be discussing inside it?” while waiting for the big reveal.
On the field, the celebration continued as Kohli went on to surpass 28,000 international runs, further cementing his legendary status on a day that literally put him “out of the box.”
