Virat Kohli refuses Travis Head’s handshake: What triggered the drama?
A win by 55 runs might belong to Sunrisers Hyderabad after beating Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026, yet what stood out wasn’t the scoreboard. Instead, sparks flew post-match Friday when words passed between Virat Kohli and Travis Head. The game faded behind their tense moment.
Even though the contest had little effect on playoff chances, feelings flared under the lights. A spark between Kohli and Head lit up during RCB’s run pursuit, sparked by sharp talk mid-pitch. What unfolded next stretched beyond the final ball – Kohli seemed to pass by without taking the hand held out by the SRH batsman.

Virat Kohli struggled hard, scoring only 15 runs from 11 balls until Sakib Hussain sent him back. Even so, while he stood near the wicket, shouting at Head sparked what turned into a key scene that day.
Footage shown on TV, plus posts spreading online, show Head aiming sharp words at Kohli. Word is the Hyderabad player questioned Kohli’s aggressive play style, which made the Bangalore star fire back fast. The exchange unfolded mid-game, caught by cameras near the boundary line. Tension rose quickly after the comment landed between overs.
Virat Kohli gestured for Head to grab the ball, possibly hinting he usually leaves early under the Impact Player rule. With Head still playing this match, sources say Kohli nudged him to prove his full role by bowling. The moment hung oddly mid-game, quiet but sharp.
Back then, while calling the game, ex-India player Irfan Pathan broke down what had happened.
“Virat Kohli invited Travis Head to bowl off-spin. He mentioned that Head usually walks off as the Impact Player. That’s where the banter started again, and Kohli challenged him to bowl,” Pathan said on air.
Moments after the game ended, ex-India spinner Harbhajan Singh offered his thoughts on the handshake that followed. A different view came through when he spoke up about that brief exchange between players.
“Travis Head did extend his hand, but Virat Kohli didn’t shake it. I’m not sure what exactly happened, but the banter between the two in the middle clearly carried on after the game,” Harbhajan said on Star Sports.
Later on, Head gave in and sent down a few overs, not before Kohli walked back to the dugout. That same over saw him pick up a scalp, bringing Patidar’s stay at the crease to an early close. His turn with the ball lasted just one round but left its mark.
