Virat Kohli’s bat did not work against SRH, yet world record was made

Whenever veteran batsman Virat Kohli comes to the crease, whether he scores runs or not, a record is definitely broken. Something similar happened on Friday (May 22) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Kohli scored only 15 runs in 11 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The pair of Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer gave an excellent start to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), chasing the target of 256 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Both made a partnership of 60 runs in 4.3 overs. However, Kohli’s contribution in this partnership was only 14 runs. Whereas Venkatesh scored 44 runs in 19 balls.

Venkatesh was dismissed by Ishaan Malinga. After this, Kohli also could not last long and became the victim of Saqib Hussain in the next over. However, by then a world record had already been added to his name. Kohli became the batsman involved in the highest number of 50 plus run partnerships in the history of men’s T20 cricket. He left behind Alex Hales, who was involved in partnerships of more than 50 runs 210 times. Kohli has been involved in a 50 plus run partnership for the 211th time.

RCB remained on top even after losing to SRH

In reply to SRH’s 255 runs, RCB could score only 200 runs after losing 4 wickets and lost the match by 55 runs. However, despite this big defeat, RCB finished first in the points table. SRH needed to restrict the defending champions to 166 or below to overtake RCB in terms of net run rate.

SRH’s hopes were raised with the dismissal of Venkatesh and Kohli in consecutive overs but Rajat Patidar (56 runs in 39 balls) and Krunal Pandya (41 not out in 31 balls) dashed their hopes. Now RCB will face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1, while SRH will have to play the eliminator.
