New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit India to attend the BRICS summit to be held in India this year. This possible visit is being considered very important from the point of view of global diplomacy and geopolitical balance. According to Russian state media, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has confirmed that Putin will attend the BRICS summit in India later this year. Although, the official date of the conference has not been announced yet, but according to reports it may be held in mid-September 2026.
Global importance of BRICS summit
BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) is an influential grouping of the world’s leading emerging countries, which discusses issues such as economic cooperation, trade, development and global governance. In recent years the organization has expanded and added several new member countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia and Indonesia. After this expansion, BRICS has now become a group of 11 countries, which has further strengthened its global role.
President Putin’s visit to India is taking place at a time when rapid changes are taking place in global politics. The visit will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the long-standing strategic partnership between India and Russia. India and Russia have deep ties in the areas of defence, energy and trade. Russia has been India’s major partner, especially in the import of crude oil and supply of defense equipment.
During this visit, it is expected to further enhance bilateral cooperation between the two countries, discuss new projects and increase coordination on global issues.
The eyes of America and western countries
Many western countries including the United States will also keep an eye on Putin’s visit. Tension has increased between Russia and Western countries after the Ukraine war, in such a situation India’s role is being seen as a balanced diplomatic player. Experts believe that maintaining India’s relations with Russia as well as balancing strategic partnerships with Western countries has become the hallmark of its foreign policy.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin had visited India in December 2025, where he participated in the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit with Narendra Modi. During this meeting, both the countries had emphasized on increasing cooperation in the fields of energy, defense and trade. The commitment to further strengthen the “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership” was also reiterated.
