Voting today for the first phase of general elections in Myanmar
New Delhi 28 December: Voting in Myanmar today Voting will be held today for the first phase of general elections in Myanmar. The second phase of the three-phase elections will be held on January 11 and the third on January 25. These elections are being held in 2021, five years after the military overthrew the government of Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
Voting was to be held today in 102 constituencies out of 330 in the country, but voting has been canceled in 56 of them. The military seized power on February 1, 2021, claiming widespread voter registration irregularities in the 2020 elections. Six parties are contesting the elections. More than five thousand candidates are contesting for more than eleven seats in both houses of the National Assembly and state and territorial assemblies.
Aung San Suu Kyi and her party are not participating in the elections. According to the United Nations, an estimated ninety thousand people have been killed and more than 35 lakh people have been displaced in the conflict in Myanmar following the 2021 rebellion.
