However, health experts believe that by adopting the right routine and healthy habits, a person can remain active, energetic and fit for a long time even at this age.

1. Do light exercise and strength training daily

After the age of 50, it is very important to keep the body active. Walking briskly, yoga, cycling or doing light strength training for 30 to 45 minutes daily keeps the muscles strong and also maintains the strength of the bones. Doing light weight exercises two to three days a week can improve body balance and reduce the risk of falls.

2. Eat protein and a balanced diet

With increasing age, the body’s need for adequate protein, calcium, vitamin D and fiber increases. Include pulses, milk, curd, cheese, eggs, fish, green vegetables, fruits and whole grains in your diet. Limiting the intake of excessive fried food, excess sugar and processed food keeps weight under control and can also reduce the risk of diseases like heart and diabetes.

3. Get regular health checkups done

Regular health checkups after 50 years should not be ignored. By getting blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, eye examination, prostate related examination (as per doctor’s advice) and other necessary tests done from time to time, diseases can be detected in time. If there is any pre-existing disease, it is important to regularly follow the medicines and advice prescribed by the doctor.

4. Adequate sleep and control stress

It is very important to have 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep daily for good health. Adequate sleep improves body recovery, reduces mental stress and keeps the immune system strong. Apart from this, meditation, pranayam, spending time with family and indulging in activities of your choice help in maintaining better mental health.
