Waqf Bill JPC: Committee will go to five states, target to present report before winter session

New Delhi: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed on the Waqf Bill will visit 5 states next week. This decision has been taken so that the committee can submit its report on time. However, there have been several instances when the date of submission of reports of committees has been extended.

But committee chairperson BJP MP Jagdambika Pal wants to submit the report within the stipulated time limit. JPC members will interact with their Minority Affairs Department, Law Department, Minority Commission and Waqf Board in the capitals of these five states. She will also meet other stakeholders including the Bar Council and Muttawalli associations.

There was a huge uproar between the opposition MPs and the Delhi Waqf Board in the meeting held a day earlier on Tuesday. Opposition MPs had said that it is illegal to allow the Delhi Waqf Board to give a presentation without the approval of the Delhi government.

Waqf Board is under the Minority Affairs Ministry of Delhi, hence any report of Waqf Board is necessary to get approval from the government. The Waqf Board ignored this. JPC, after talking to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha, had given permission to the Delhi Waqf Board to give the presentation without the approval of the Delhi Government.
