Authorities in Vinh Phuc Province on Thursday detonated two bombs that were said to be remnants of the Vietnam War.
The bombs, weighing 300-400 kg each, were found in Song Lo District in the northern province.
The district’s Department of Education and Training had requested the temporary suspension of teaching and learning on the Thursday morning at schools in six communes and one town to ensure safety for local teachers and students.
In recent years, some localities in Vinh Phuc have discovered and detonated bombs and ammunition left from the war. On Oct. 24, a war-time bomb weighing 1,362 kg was also removed to a safe location in Hanoi.
According to the Technology Center for Bomb and Mine Disposal under the Engineering Command, up to 7,645 of the 8,686 communes in Vietnam’s 63 provinces and cities are polluted with unexploded ordnance (UXOs).
Statistics from the National Steering Committee for Recovery over Postwar Bomb and Landmine Impacts showed that some 800,000 tonnes of UXOs are scattered across 6.6 million hectares, or 20.12% of the country’s land, mainly in the central region, putting people in danger every day.
