Washington Hilton shook again after 45 years: From Ronald Reagan to Donald Trump, why is this hotel becoming a witness to terror?
Washington. The historic Washington Hilton Hotel in America’s capital Washington once again became the center of fear and chaos. This is the same place where the then President Ronald Reagan was fatally attacked 45 years ago. Now in the year 2026, once again during the presence of President Donald Trump in the same hotel, sounds like firing shook the entire atmosphere.
1981: There was a fatal attack on Reagan-
On March 30, 1981, Ronald Reagan attended an event at this hotel. As soon as he came out, the attacker John Hinckley Jr. opened fire on him. Several people including Reagan were injured in the attack, including Press Secretary James Brady, who was seriously injured and left disabled for life. After this incident, major changes were made in the security arrangements of the American President.
2026: Chaos in Trump’s presence-
The White House Correspondents’ Dinner was held at the hotel on the night of April 25, 2026, in which President Donald Trump was present as the chief guest. Around 2600 people were involved in the programme, when suddenly loud sounds like firing were heard.
Initially it was thought to be a technical glitch, but after some time it became clear that it was sounds like gunfire. According to eyewitnesses, sounds like 4 to 6 rounds of firing were heard outside the lobby and ballroom, due to which there was a stampede on the spot.
Quick action of Secret Service-
As the situation worsened, the US Secret Service immediately took charge and President Donald Trump and Melania Trump were taken out safely. The people present in the hall hid under the tables, while many lay down on the ground.
Security forces surrounded the entire hotel and detained the suspect from the lobby area. Officials have confirmed that the President and all VVIPs are safe.
Same place, two big security crises-
Washington Hilton Hotel has now joined those rare places where serious security incidents have come to light in the presence of two US Presidents at different times. There was a fatal attack on Reagan in 1981, while an incident like firing in the presence of Trump in 2026 has once again raised questions on the security system.
Experts say that even though VVIP security is tight, security of the entire complex always remains a challenge in big events.
