Washington Sundar injured despite leading India to victory in the first ODI, side strain confirmed

Tezzbuzz Desk- In the first ODI match played between India and New Zealand, the Indian team registered a spectacular victory by four wickets, but amidst this victory, the worries of Team India also increased. The fear of injury to all-rounder Washington Sundar has alerted the team management. 26-year-old Sundar felt a muscle strain while bowling, after which the decision has been taken to undergo a scan.

Washington Sundar bowled five overs in the match, in which he conceded 27 runs. However, during New Zealand’s innings, he felt uncomfortable and left the field. After this he did not return to bowling again, due to which questions were raised about his injury.

Despite injury problems, Sundar showed courage in the Indian race. Coming in at number eight in the batting order, he along with Lokesh Rahul formed an important partnership in pressure situations. Together, they made an unbroken partnership of 27 runs in 16 balls and helped India cross the threshold of victory.

However, one thing caught everyone’s attention during this time – Sundar and Rahul did not take even two runs even once till the 48th over. Sundar was seen playing with only one run each, which gave an idea of the seriousness of his injury. Sundar returned unbeaten after scoring seven runs, while Rahul played an unbeaten inning of 29 runs.

Chasing the target of 301 runs, the Indian team won the match by losing six wickets in 49 overs. The intelligent batting of Rahul and Sundar in the lower order brought the team out of trouble and led to victory.

At the post-match awards ceremony, Indian captain Shubman Gill clarified the situation regarding Sundar’s injury. He said,
“Washington Sundar has a side strain and will undergo a scan after the match.”
It is clear from Gill’s statement that the team management does not want to take any risk and further decisions will be taken only after the medical report.

Lokesh Rahul also admitted after the match that he was not aware of the seriousness of Sundar’s injury on the field. Rahul said, “I did not know that he could not run. I knew that he had a little problem in the first innings, but I had no idea that it was so serious.”

Praising Sundar’s batting, Rahul further said that at that time the team was progressing at the rate of almost one run per ball, so there was no need to take risks. “There was not much pressure on him. He rotated the strike and did his job well,” Rahul said.

Now all eyes are on Washington Sundar’s scan report. Considering the upcoming matches, his fitness will be very important for Team India. Contributing to the team’s victory despite injury shows Sundar’s passion and responsibility, but the decision on his availability will now be taken only after the medical report.
