New Delhi: On the strength of two goals from star striker Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal defeated Poland 5-1 on Friday and secured their place in the quarter-finals of the Nations League football tournament. Ronaldo performed brilliantly in the match played in Porto and was adjudged the best player of the match. He scored the 134th goal of his international career on a penalty kick (72nd minute) and then a little later (87th minute) he scored a goal with a bicycle kick on an overhead pass, taking his total number of goals for Portugal to 135. Ronaldo then celebrated in his usual style. Apart from Ronaldo, Rafa Leao, Bruno Fernandes and Pedro Neto scored goals. Poland scored the only goal in the 88th minute. With this defeat, Poland’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals ended.

Scotland kept alive their hopes of staying in the top flight of the tournament by beating Croatia 1-0 to register their first win in nine matches. Meanwhile, in Bucharest, Romania and Kosovo’s match was halted in injury time and later ended in a goalless draw. Players from both teams scuffled and the Kosovo players left the pitch. UEFA, the governing body of European football, did not say why the game was halted but Kosovo players were reportedly upset by pro-Serbian chants.
The football body said in a statement on its website, “The UEFA Nations League match between Romania and Kosovo has been cancelled. UEFA will provide further information in due course.” Spain, which has already secured first place in Group A4, beat Denmark 2-1 in Copenhagen. France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal have already confirmed their places in the quarter-finals.
