There were unprecedented scenes at the Kensington Oval in Barbados after West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph simply walked out of the field in the middle of the innings after a heated argument with his skipper Shai Hope. The incident occurred in the third and final ODI between hosts West Indies and England on Wednesday.

Former Gujarat Titans pacer Alzarri Joseph stormed off the field during the opening powerplay of the third ODI fuming with the field he had been given to bowl to. Joseph opened the bowling alongside Matthew Forde after West Indies won the toss and put England in to bat in Bridgetown, with the pair building pressure immediately.

Forde dismissed Will Jacks with the third ball of his second over, leaving England 9 for 1. When Joseph came on to bowl the next over, there was a long discussion between him and West Indies captain Shai Hope, seemingly about the field Joseph would have for the next over.

After Joseph bowled his first ball, which was steered towards backward point by Jordan Cox, the pacer bowler was visibly unhappy. He stood waving his arms at Hope and the two slips which were in place at the start of the over.

After arguing his case, Joseph continued the over, and delivered Cox a peach of a delivery with his fourth ball which was clocked at 90mph that Cox attempted to fend off but gloved through to skipper Hope behind the stumps.

The wicket didn’t do anything to change Joseph’s mood. Towards the end of the over, West Indies coach Daren Sammy was seen down on the boundary attempting to gesture to Joseph to calm the situation down. Once he had completed the over, Joseph stormed straight off the field and up the stairs to the West Indies dressing room.

When Joseph didn’t reappear for the next over, sub-fielder Hayden Walsh Jr started to remove his bib to replace him. But Joseph came down the stairs and sat out a few balls in the dugout, leaving West Indies with 10 players on the field for a few deliveries of the over before rejoining the team. He was taken off bowling duty, however, and Romario Shepherd was brought on.

Former England batter Mark Butcher was vocal on commentary about how the incident was handled on the field. “Many is the time, as a captain or as a player, that you have a disagreement about something on the field. But you work that out either behind closed doors, or you get on with your job. Your captain asks you to bowl to a field, you bowl to it,” Butcher said on air.

England went on to post 263 for 8 after being reduced to 24 for 4 and 94 for 5. Opener Phil Salt top-scored with 74 while Sam Curran chipped in with 40 and Dan Mousley scored 57 off 70 balls. All-rounders Jamie Overton and Jofra Archer’s 32 and 38 respectively gave much-needed impetus to the innings. Alzarri Joseph went on to complete his spell, claiming 2/45 in 10 overs.

In reply, West Indies chased down the target with ease thanks to centuries from Keacy Carty and Brandon Kings. While Carty remained unbeaten on 128 off 114 balls, King scored 102 off 117 balls as Windies won by eight wickets with 7 overs to spare to clinch the three-match series 2-1.

“No comments! In a situation like that, you have to understand that such things can happen. It shows that we always fight when we are challenged. The importance of doing things off the field translates onto the field. I am really happy with the way our batting unit performed and the bowlers also did really well,” West Indies captain Shai Hope said when asked about the Alzarri Joseph incident.
