Water metro project on Gomti river in Lucknow will start soon

Lucknow 02 January 2026: A new chapter of water transport in the state is going to start with the Water Metro. Instead of boats, the metro equipped with technology will run on the stock of Gomati river, which will give a new direction to the development of the state. On Friday, Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh held a meeting with Kochi Metro Director Sanjay Kumar. The technical feasibility study report for running water metro on Gomti river in Lucknow was discussed.

The government has indicated that the process of running water metro on Gomti river will be started soon. After this, the plan to run water metro on Yamuna river in Mathura, Ramgarh pond in Gorakhpur, Surha pond in Ballia and from Agra to Mathura on Ganga river will be taken forward.

The Transport Minister had said that technical feasibility study reports have already been prepared for three major places in the state. In Lucknow, work is going on to run water metro on Gomti river. Water Metro will not only provide modern transportation facilities to the people, but will also promote tourism, create new employment opportunities and give impetus to economic activities.
This project will also provide a new source of entertainment for the public. The Transport Minister clarified that many important technical and environmental processes will need to be completed before the water metro becomes operational.

This includes detailed study of systems like navigational aids, integrated traffic management system, passenger counting system, environmental management, social impact study, terminal and jetty construction, road connectivity, pontoon, automatic fare collection system, electrical infrastructure (11 kV high tension line), boat charger, fire protection system, HVAC etc.

After all these studies, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared. Based on the DPR, the estimated cost of the project will be determined, and then the government or concerned authorities will invite tenders for individual works. After completion of the tender process, the project will be implemented.

Transport Minister Dayashankar Singh directed the departmental officers to expedite all necessary actions related to the Water Metro Project, so that the Chief Minister’s dream project can be implemented soon. He also directed to provide complete details of the possible expenditure on the project, so that the process of budget allocation at the government level can be completed on time.
