Wave of mourning in the film industry, famous cinematographer Dilip Ray passes away, breathed his last at the age of 72

Cinematographer Dilip Ray, who played an important role in shaping Odia cinema for several decades, has passed away at the age of 72. Ray died on Friday night at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar after a brief illness, his family told PTI on Saturday. There is a wave of mourning in the cinema world due to this news.

Odisha Chief Minister expressed grief

The film industry and political leaders alike have paid tribute to Ray, who was an iconic name in the Odia and Bengali film industry, on his demise. He is survived by his wife and three daughters. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi described his demise as an irreparable loss to the artistic and cultural landscape of the state and said that Ray’s contribution in enriching the Odia film industry will always be remembered.

Who was Dilip Ray?

Born on July 27, 1954 in Cuttack, Dilip Ray received training in cinematography from the Film and Television Institute (FTI), Bengaluru and began a career that spanned several decades. Known for his technical proficiency and visual storytelling, Dilip Ray became one of the most respected cinematographers in regional cinema.

During his career, Ray worked in more than 80 Odia feature films, about 15 Bengali films and several Chhattisgarhi films. His work also included documentaries and television serials, showing his versatility across a variety of formats.

Honored with these awards

Dilip Ray received the Odisha State Film Award for Best Cinematography five times, cementing his reputation as one of the finest visual artists in the industry. Some of his most recognized Oriya films include Tisandhya, Baje Banki Naache Ghungura, Chaka Bhaunri, Eeta Duniya, Mamta Ra Dora, Majhi Pahacha and Bidhira Bidhana.
