We have not forgotten America’s habit of breaking promises, Iran’s sharp attitude amid peace talks

Tehran. Iran has adopted a tough stance amid ongoing talks with America. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqai said the country “has not forgotten and will not forget” America’s past breaking of promises. This reflects the deep distrust in Islamabad even as talks continue. He said no one had expected a result in one round of talks.

However, Iran has been reiterating even before the start of talks that there is a lack of trust with the US. Describing the talks as intense and long, he said, “Today was a busy and long day for the Iranian delegation in Islamabad. The in-depth talks, which started on Saturday morning with good efforts and mediation by Pakistan, have continued without any interruption and many messages and text exchanges took place between the two sides.”

Emphasizing the Iranian delegation’s steadfast resolve, Baqai said, “Iranian negotiators are using their full capabilities, experience and knowledge to safeguard Iran’s rights and interests. The enormous loss of our elders, loved ones and fellow countrymen has made our resolve to advance the interests and rights of the Iranian nation stronger than ever.”

Reiterating Iran’s broad stance, he said, “Nothing can or should stop us from pursuing our great historical mission for our beloved country and the great Iranian civilization. Iran firmly intends to use all means, including diplomacy, to secure its country’s interests and safeguard its well-being.” According to Bakai, in the talks held in the last 24 hours, special issues like Hormuz Strait, nuclear program, war damages, relief in sanctions and ending the ongoing regional conflicts were discussed.

“The success of this diplomatic process depends on the other side’s seriousness and good faith, avoiding excessive demands and unlawful appeals, and respecting Iran’s legal rights and interests,” he stressed. After the end of the new round of talks, there will be another round of talks between Iran and the US on Pakistan’s proposal, for which nothing has been decided yet regarding the time and place.

The conversation, which started at 1 pm local time on Saturday, lasted for more than 14 hours and involved continuous exchange of messages and draft texts. According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, the talks took place amidst continuing differences. Although some initial progress has been made, serious differences remain, mainly due to what Iran says are absurd and excessive conditions imposed by the US.
