Weather Update: Monsoon wreaks havoc across the country, heavy rain alert in 13 states; Flood like situation in Gujarat-Maharashtra

New Delhi, 5 July. Monsoon has now become fully active across the country and life has been affected due to continuous torrential rains in many states. Rivers are in spate, roads are submerged and flood like conditions have arisen in many areas. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warning of thunderstorm and heavy rain in 13 states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand.

Rain became a disaster in Gujarat

Due to heavy rains in Junagadh, Gujarat, many residential areas and roads have been flooded with up to four feet of water. The administration has to resort to boats to take people to safe places. Traffic has also been affected due to waterlogging in many parts of Ahmedabad. In Navsari, 11 villages have been cut off from the main city due to the collapse of a part of the bridge built on the Ambika River. The Meteorological Department has advised fishermen not to go into the sea till July 8.

Floods and accidents in Maharashtra

A six-year-old child died after being swept away by strong flood currents in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. Relief and rescue teams have rescued more than 180 people. Due to heavy rains and winds in the capital Mumbai, 64 trees fell, while the walls of eight houses collapsed at different places.

Alert of heavy rain for five days in Rajasthan

Monsoon is continuously active in Rajasthan. Good rainfall has been recorded in Sikar, Sawai Madhopur and Jhalawar. The Meteorological Department has issued a rain alert in the entire state for the next five days. There is a possibility of heavy rain in Jaipur, Kota and Bharatpur divisions.

Life affected due to rain in Madhya Pradesh

Heavy rain occurred in more than 20 districts of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday. One person died due to lightning in Sheopur, while his daughter was injured. Two children died due to drowning in Ashta area of ​​Sehore district. Water of Kalimachak river is flowing over the bridge in Harda. Warning of heavy rain has been issued in Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain and Narmadapuram on Sunday.

Waterlogging due to half an hour of rain in Chhattisgarh

Heavy rain occurred in many districts including the capital Raipur. Raipur recorded 30 mm of rain in just half an hour, due to which houses and roads were filled with knee-deep water in many areas including Tatibandh.

Danger of landslides in Uttarakhand and Himachal

Due to rise in the water level of Mandakini river in Kedarghati of Uttarakhand, a JCB and its two employees got stuck in the middle of the river, but were rescued safely. Yamunotri National Highway had to be closed for some time due to landslide in Uttarkashi. Orange alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh for July 6 and 7. The Meteorological Department has expressed fear of flash floods and landslides.

Weak monsoon in Bihar and Haryana

Bihar has received 52 percent less rainfall than normal so far this monsoon season. Yellow alert has been issued in 18 districts on Sunday. There is a possibility of strong winds and light to moderate rain in seven districts of Haryana.

Impact in Punjab, Chandigarh and Jammu and Kashmir also

Rain alert continues in 10 districts of Punjab and Chandigarh. Traffic has been stopped after landslides on Ramnagar-Udhampur road in Jammu and Kashmir.

6th July

  • Heavy rain alert in 28 districts of Uttar Pradesh.
  • Red alert in 2 districts of West Bengal and 5 districts of Odisha.
  • Orange alert effective in many other districts.

7th July

  • Possibility of torrential rain in Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and Odisha.
  • Orange alert issued for heavy to very heavy rain in Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Goa, Telangana and Coastal Karnataka.

IMD’s appeal

The Meteorological Department has appealed to people to stay away from rivers, streams and waterlogged areas, avoid unnecessary travel and follow the guidelines issued by the local administration. In view of the continuous rains, relief and rescue teams have been put on alert mode in many states.
