Weather Update : Uttarakhand, Punjab along with Jammu and Kashmir has increased in cold; Snowfall in hilly areas

New Delhi : For the past few days atmosphereA great change is felt. In addition, the cold has made it difficult to literally go out of the house. North India, particularly Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir are witnessing bitter cold. A new Western Disturbance has brought snow and severe cold to the mountains. The combined effects of cold waves, dense smog and pollution are directly affecting life in the plains.

Temperatures in the Kashmir Valley dipped to minus 18 degrees Celsius, while in Delhi-NCR, despite summer days, the air quality index touched 349, which falls in the worst category. Further drop in temperature, intensifying cold wave and possibility of heavy snowfall in the Himalayan regions may make the weather more difficult in the coming days. The intensity of cold is likely to increase in Uttarakhand on Friday (12th). Heavy snowfall warning has been issued for Himalayan districts like Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh. Minimum temperatures are expected to remain below freezing in most of the highlands.

Meanwhile, strong cold winds and dense fog are making morning and evening travel difficult in plains like Dehradun, Haridwar and Udhamsingh Nagar. According to the Meteorological Department, the temperature is expected to continue to fall in Uttarakhand till mid-December and there is a possibility of road blockage in the high Himalayan region.

Dense fog in Punjab and Haryana

Dense fog is forecast to cover large parts of Punjab and Haryana. Road and rail traffic is likely to be affected due to reduced visibility. Dense fog is expected to persist for the next five days along with the drop in temperature. A very low visibility warning has also been issued in the morning and evening over Haryana-Chandigarh region.

Alert warning from Meteorological Department

Snowfall may disrupt road traffic in upper Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and Kullu areas. There are signs of further drop in temperature in and around Shimla. The Meteorological Department has advised tourists and local administration to exercise caution.
