Weather Update: Weather changed color on New Year, high alert of rain and snowfall in these states!

New Delhi: Farewell to the year 2025 and welcome to 2026 is going to be accompanied by severe cold and changing weather. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that the weather pattern is going to deteriorate from North India to East India. While there is a dense fog in Uttar Pradesh, snowfall on the mountains has increased the chill in the plains.

Fog and cold alert in UP-Bihar

The coming few days may be challenging for the people of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. According to the Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of ‘extremely dense fog’ during night and morning hours till January 1, 2026. However, after this the fog conditions may improve slightly. At the same time, there is a possibility of severe cold in Bihar on December 31, due to which the effect of cold wave can be seen on the New Year celebrations.

Snowfall and rain in the mountains

A different view of nature is being seen in the hilly states. There is a strong possibility of snowfall and rain in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan and Muzaffarabad on Thursday. Not only this, light to moderate rain and snowfall may continue in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till January 2, which will have a direct impact on the temperature in the plains.

How will be the New Year weather in Delhi?

A slight increase in temperature can be seen in the country’s capital Delhi from the first day of the new year i.e. January 1, which is expected to provide some relief from the chill. On Thursday, the minimum temperature of Delhi can be between 10 to 12 degrees and the maximum can be between 18 to 20 degrees. However, Delhiites may have to face light rain and fog will prevail in some areas in the morning.

Condition of Rajasthan and Punjab-Haryana

Due to the active Western Disturbance, there may be light drizzle in Bikaner, Jaipur and Bharatpur divisions of Rajasthan on Thursday. There is an alert of dense fog in the northern and eastern parts of the state between January 1 and 3. On the other hand, there is a possibility of rain in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on December 31 and January 1.

Cold wave havoc in Bengal and Jharkhand

The mercury has dropped below 10 degrees in many parts of West Bengal. There is a possibility of snowfall in the upper reaches of Darjeeling, while severe cold will continue in the sub-Himalayan districts for the next one week. In Jharkhand too, icy winds are blowing due to western disturbance. There has been a warning of cold wave in areas like Ranchi, Gumla and Khunti on December 31, which will increase the chill on New Year’s Eve.
