According to the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry, five OTT apps have been banned for displaying obscene content. That list includes Mood X VIP, Quail Playpro, Digi Movieplex, Phil and Jugunu. It is learned that the OTT platforms have been warned by the Center several times before for displaying ‘obscene’ content. But despite that, they did not listen to that. Because of this, the Center has taken strict action. These OTT platforms can no longer be used in India.
Earlier in 2024, the Center had banned 18 OTT platforms under the Information Technology Act (2021). Not only this, a case was also filed against the owner of the apps. Apart from 18 OTT platforms, 19 websites, 10 apps and 57 websites have also been shut down by the Centre.
