New Delhi : In a case highlighting the interconnectedness of mental health and surgical emergencies, doctors at a private hospital in Delhi successfully treated a 20-year-old man who swallowed a shaving razor in a fit of anger after a fight with his father.
The young man, suffering from depression and suicidal tendencies, swallowed the razor in two parts – the blade holder and the handle, putting his life in danger. Her father also suffers from mental illness, adding to the family's challenges. Scans revealed that the blade holder had become lodged in his stomach, while the handle had gone into the large intestine.
How was the surgery done?
Under the leadership of Dr. Tarun Mittal, a team of surgeons including Dr. Anmol Ahuja, Dr. Shrestha Manglik, Dr. Rakesh S, Dr. Karthik Krishna and Dr. Tanushree Nahta followed the two-step process. First, a laparotomy was performed and the abdomen was opened to remove the blade. Then, very carefully, the handle found in the colon is pulled out and pushed out.

The handle was removed using sigmoidoscopy. It was a cumulative effort of careful planning and teamwork. Dr. Mittal said, “This was a unique case, not only because of the nature of the foreign body but also because of the psychological factors. Addressing such cases requires both good medical care and sensitivity to the mental health of the patient.”
