Kolkata, March 6. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday began a protest against the alleged arbitrary deletion of names of voters from the voter list after Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in the state.
TMC chief targets BJP and Election Commission
Starting the dharna in the afternoon near the Esplanade metro station of the metropolis, CM Mamata targeted the BJP and the Election Commission. He reiterated his call to expose the Bengali voters by accusing them of hatching a conspiracy to deprive them of voting.
‘I will expose the conspiracy to disenfranchise Bengali voters’
TMC chief Banerjee said, ‘I will expose the BJP-Election Commission conspiracy to disenfranchise Bengali voters.’ He also alleged that many voters were wrongly shown as dead in the revised voter list. I will present at this protest site those voters who have been declared dead by the Election Commission.
It is noteworthy that TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee had announced this strike on Sunday itself. Abhishek had accused the Election Commission of taking politically motivated action, due to which lakhs of legitimate voters could be disenfranchised months before the assembly elections.
The protest by TMC comes just days after the Election Commission published the post-SIR voterlist, which has significantly changed the voter count in the state.

According to official data released in the state on February 28, since the start of the SIR process in November last year, about 8.3 percent or 63.66 lakh names of the number of voters have been removed, reducing the voter base from about 7.66 crore to a little over 7.04 crore.
60.06 More than lakh voters in category under judicial scrutiny
Additionally, more than 60.06 lakh voters have been placed in the category under judicial scrutiny, meaning their eligibility will be decided through a legal investigation in the coming weeks. This is a process that can change the electoral equations at the constituency level.
