Bad news for Mamata Banerjee before the elections, this powerful party leader joined BJP

West Bengal Elections 2026: Just before the West Bengal Assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee’s party All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) has suffered a major political setback. Party leader Arghya Roy Pradhan has left TMC and joined Bharatiya Janata Party. This development has happened at a time when the election atmosphere is intensifying in the state.

BJP welcomed, announced ticket

Arghya Roy Pradhan’s formal entry was made in the press conference organized by BJP. During this, opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari described him as a leader dedicated to the development of North Bengal.

BJP leader Giriraj Shankar Roy announced that Arghya Rai Pradhan would be made the party candidate from Mekhliganj seat. It is clear from this that BJP is going to give him an important role in the election strategy.

Family legacy and regional influence

Arghya Rai Pradhan’s political base is considered strong in North Bengal. His father Amar Roy Pradhan has also been a popular leader in this area. BJP leaders believe that the party can benefit from this legacy and support base in the elections, especially in Cooch Behar and surrounding areas.

Sharp attack on TMC

As soon as he joined BJP, Arghya Roy Pradhan launched a scathing attack on TMC and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He said that he could not remain a part of the ‘corrupt party’ and was feeling uncomfortable in answering in front of the public. He claimed that the politics of Bengal has now become ‘Mamata versus the public’ and TMC’s support base is eroding.

Claim to raise regional issues

In the press conference, BJP leader Banshi Badan Barman raised the issue of recognizing Rajbanshi language and protecting the rights of local communities. Arghya Rai Pradhan also termed the development of North Bengal as his priority and said that he only wants to work in the interest of the region.

Controversial statements and political allegations

Arghya Rai Pradhan accused TMC of dividing communities and betraying the public. He also targeted the opposition leaders and said that some parties are doing ‘vote bank politics’. However, controversy may arise regarding some of his statements, because he also commented on religious and social issues.

Impact on electoral equations

This joining of TMC to BJP is being considered important for the upcoming elections. BJP is already in a strong position in North Bengal and with the arrival of Arghya Rai Pradhan, it is expected to get further gains. On the other hand, for TMC, this is a signal that the party will have to further strengthen its organization so that it can face the electoral challenge.
