West Bengal Elections; Congress released the list of 284 candidates, Adhir Ranjan will contest from Baharampur.
Applications from 2,500 leaders came to contest elections for 294 seats.
New Delhi. Congress released its first list of 284 candidates for the West Bengal Assembly elections. Congress has fielded former party state unit president Adhir Ranjan Choudhary from Baharampur and former Trinamool Congress MP Mausam Noor from Maltipur. Congress is contesting alone in the 294-member state assembly elections and has announced 284 candidates in the very first list.
The party has fielded Madhap Rai from Darjeeling, Abdul Hannan from Sujapur, Susmita Biswas from Dum Dum, Gautam Bhattacharya from Diamond Harbour, Souvik Mukherjee from Asansol South and Prasenjit Puitandi from Asansol North. South Kolkata District President Pradeep Prasad has been fielded from the prestigious Bhawanipur Assembly seat. This seat will see a tough contest between Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari.
Congress leader Suman Roy Chowdhury, nominated from Maniktala seat, said the party has carefully selected candidates with strong organizational background.
Roy Chowdhury said that I am grateful to the party leadership for nominating me. I will try my best to live up to expectations. I will work with everyone to prepare the infrastructure in this area for the future. Apart from Bhawanipur, Nandigram assembly seat is also in the news. Adhikari is contesting from this seat also and Congress has fielded youth leader Zariatul Hussain as its candidate. The announcement of Congress candidates came a day after the party’s top leadership held detailed deliberations on the list of candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections during the Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting.
2,500 applications came for 294 seats
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party president Rahul Gandhi, All India Congress Committee general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal and leaders from West Bengal attended the meeting. Among the leaders who attended the meeting are former party West Bengal unit chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Central Election Committee (CEC) members Ambika Soni, Madhusudan Mistry, Salman Khurshid, TS Singhdev, KJ George, PL Punia and Ami Yagnik. Apart from these, Ghulam Ahmed Mir, in-charge of West Bengal affairs in AICC, was also present in the meeting. Mir said that the party has received 2,500 applications for 294 assembly seats. West Bengal Assembly elections will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29. The date of May 4 has been fixed for counting of votes.
