What is Nipah virus?

According to WHO, Nipah virus is a dangerous disease which spreads from animals to humans. It was first identified in Malaysia in 1999. Even today it remains a cause of concern in many countries of South-East Asia. The main source of this virus is considered to be fruit-eating bats.

Reason for spread of Nipah virus

Contaminated Food

Nipah virus spreads quickly through fruits gnawed or contaminated by bats (such as dates, mangoes) and by drinking toddy (palm juice) contaminated with the saliva or urine of infected bats or pigs.

Contact with Animals

There is a high risk of Nipah viral spread through direct contact with body fluids like saliva, urine, blood of infected bats or pigs.

Human-to-Human

The risk of Nipah virus also increases due to coming in contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person like saliva, urine, blood.
