Kolkata, 28 May. The latest example of how dissatisfaction emerges in political parties and how leaders change colors after seizing power is visible in West Bengal. In fact, only after the huge defeat of Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC), which has been ruling continuously for 15 years, at the hands of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leaders from the national level to the town are eager to leave TMC.
In the same sequence, former Rajya Sabha member and TMC leader Shantanu Sen also resigned from the post of national spokesperson on Thursday, strongly criticizing the party over the RG Kar rape/murder case and allegations of corruption related to the institution. Earlier, another TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty had also resigned from the post.
A day earlier, TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar had also resigned from the post of party women’s wing chief. In his resignation letter, he had said that the party had failed to protect him from the misbehavior of a fellow MP, which he indirectly referred to Banerjee.
Shantanu resigned by sending a letter to Mamta
Shantanu Sen sent a letter to Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee and resigned from the post of national spokesperson of the party. Interestingly, immediately after the change of government in the state, Shantanu had congratulated Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari. Apart from this he R.G. A message of cooperation was also given with Shubhendu’s administration regarding the investigation of the Kar Hospital incident. Coincidentally, Shantanu took this decision shortly after this.
What did Shantanu write in the letter sent to Mamta??
In the letter sent to Mamata, Shantanu wrote, ‘Bowing humbly before the public’s decision, I want to resign from the post of All India Spokesperson of Trinamool Congress.’ In his letter R.G. There is also mention of the Kar Hospital incident. He wrote, ‘In the present circumstances, where the people of Bengal have rejected R.G. Due to various unethical acts and incidents of corruption including the tax issue, Abhaya incident and sale of jobs, my conscience no longer allows me to defend or support these matters as a spokesperson.
Two KMC councilors resign from important civic posts
Earlier, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councilors Sushant Ghosh and Arup Chakraborty resigned from key civic posts on Wednesday and used the occasion to launch an unusually vociferous attack on the party leadership and its handling of the situation after the defeat. Ghosh resigned from the post of Borough-12 chairman, while Chakraborty resigned from the post of chairman of the civic body’s accounts committee. However, both retained their posts as councillors. His comments were more harsh than resignation.
These allegations were made against TMC
Arup Chakraborty told reporters, ‘Defeat will have to be accepted. If we do not accept defeat then even previous victories become meaningless. This is seen by many as an indirect rebuke to sections of the party leadership who had questioned the scale and narrative of the election defeat.’
Both the leaders alleged that senior ministers and influential leaders have become unreachable after the election results were declared. Chakraborty said, ‘For many years we could not even reach the Chief Minister because some people were always around him. After the defeat, many of those leaders disappeared from the streets.’
In a politically sensitive comment, he also thanked the BJP government for helping displaced supporters return home. It was a statement that gave rise to speculation about possible political realignment in the future.
Councilor Debolina Biswas has also resigned
Just a few days ago, councilor Debolina Biswas had resigned from the post of KMC’s Boro-9 president due to dissatisfaction over the poor performance of the party in Bhawanipur. Bhawanipur was once considered one of the safest strongholds of Trinamool. These developments come amid growing internal unrest within the Trinamool after it lost power in the state earlier this month.
many leaders, MLAs and councilors are publicly expressing dissatisfaction with the leadership
Meanwhile, many leaders, MLAs and councilors, including senior MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, have publicly expressed their dissatisfaction with the leadership. Some have not attended party meetings called by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee while others have openly raised questions on the functioning of the organisation.
Till now at least 60 Trinamool councilors have resigned from their posts.
According to party and civic sources, at least 60 Trinamool councilors in municipalities have resigned from their posts or distanced themselves from organizational responsibilities since the change of power in the state. These developments represent a strange situation for the party which still controls 125 of the 128 municipal bodies in West Bengal.
