West Indies’ explosion in Wankhede, historic win of 107 runs over Zimbabwe, India’s concern increased
Tezzbuzz Desk- West Indies defeated Zimbabwe by 107 runs in the Super-8 match played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. This is West Indies’ second biggest win in terms of runs in T20 World Cup history.
With this explosive performance, the Caribbean team registered its fifth consecutive win in the tournament – its first time in a T20 World Cup that it has won five consecutive matches. Four wins came in the group stage, while the fifth win came against Zimbabwe in the Super-8. After this result, West Indies reached the top of the points table of Group-A.
Batting first, West Indies scored 254 runs for 6 wickets in 20 overs, which is the second highest score in T20 World Cup history. There were 19 sixes in the team’s innings and Zimbabwe’s bowlers looked completely helpless.
Shimron Hetmyer played an explosive inning of 85 runs in just 34 balls, while the captain rovman powell Scored 59 runs in 35 balls. The partnership between the two completely changed the course of the match towards West Indies.
Zimbabwe had a bad start while chasing the huge target of 255 runs. In the power play itself, the team lost three important wickets within 50 runs. Even before reaching 100 runs, half the team had returned to the pavilion. Brad Evans, who came in at number eight, showed some fight by scoring 43 runs, but the rest of the batsmen could not survive. The entire team was reduced to 147 runs in 17.4 overs.
Gudakesh Moti was most successful in bowling. He took 4 wickets for 28 runs in 4 overs. Apart from him, Akila Hussain broke the back of Zimbabwe by taking 3 wickets.
After this big win, West Indies’ net run rate has reached above 5, which has further strengthened its position. On the other hand, India’s run rate is still in minus. In such a situation, to remain in the race for the semi-finals, India will have to keep an eye on the results of other matches also.
