The film follows events surrounding the troubled marriage between Rodney and Morgan. It also explores how the situation eventually culminated in a shocking incident one night.
Morgan Metzer suffered years of physical and mental trauma during her marriage to Rodney Metzer. He reportedly engaged in repeated gaslighting, used their twin children as leverage against her, and sexually assaulted her over the years.
In 2020, Morgan finally filed for divorce from Rodney. The divorce was finalized the same year. However, Rodney reportedly continued attempting to reconcile, including faking cancer (per 48 Hours).
After a brief period of contact, Morgan asked Rodney to leave on New Year’s Eve in 2020. However, in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2021, Morgan was assaulted at her home by a masked intruder. She was zip-tied, beaten, and sexually assaulted. Investigators later identified Rodney as the attacker. Following the investigation, Rodney was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
Morgan faced challenges while recovering from the trauma, but decided to rebuild her life. She began attending therapy and worked to move forward from the experience. Currently, her focus is on raising her two children. Moreover, Morgan is using her experience to help others facing similar situations.
“I’m trying to raise awareness for … narcissism and gaslighting,” she explained to 48 Hours (via EW). “I want to help women realize they’re in a situation before it gets too bad.”
She added, “If I don’t take the bad that came of this, that I feel God wants me to do, it’s like, why did it happen. It would have happened for no reason. I’ve got to take the pain and turn that into something that’s powerful to help women.”
