What is ED looking for at Vedanta? FEMA searches open a new chapter for the mining giant
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated searches at multiple premises linked to the Vedanta Group as part of an investigation under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), bringing renewed attention to one of India’s largest mining and metals conglomerates.
FEMA Investigation Triggers Searches
According to officials, the searches began on Monday after the central agency launched a probe into suspected violations under FEMA. While authorities have not yet disclosed specific details of the allegations, the operation is focused on examining transactions that may involve breaches of foreign exchange regulations.
The searches are continuing, and officials are expected to release further information once the initial phase of the investigation is completed.
What Prompts ED Action Under FEMA?
The Enforcement Directorate is empowered to investigate cases involving potential violations of foreign exchange laws. Such cases can include unauthorized overseas transactions, irregular foreign investments, illegal asset acquisitions abroad or non-compliance with rules governing international financial dealings.
At this stage, officials have not publicly clarified the exact nature of the suspected violations being examined in the Vedanta case.
Scrutiny Comes After Demerger Milestone
The latest development comes shortly after Vedanta secured approval from its secured creditors for a major restructuring exercise. The company recently received backing for its proposal to split its business operations into six separate listed entities, a move aimed at unlocking value and streamlining operations.
The timing of the investigation has drawn attention given the scale of the planned corporate restructuring.
Previous Controversies Involving the Company
Vedanta has faced scrutiny on multiple fronts in recent months. Earlier this year, an FIR was reportedly registered against senior company executives, including chairman Anil Agarwal, following a fatal boiler explosion at a power facility in Chhattisgarh that resulted in the deaths of more than 20 workers.
In another case, authorities in Odisha imposed a penalty exceeding ₹233 crore on Vedanta Aluminum over allegations of unauthorized water extraction from a river and canal system.
As the FEMA investigation progresses, market observers and stakeholders will be closely watching for further details from the Enforcement Directorate.
