Increasing attacks on minorities in Bangladesh
The Hindu population in Muslim-majority Bangladesh, with a population of 170 million, is less than 10 percent. After the uprising in the year 2024, there is talk of re-emergence of Islamic fundamentalist forces in the country, due to which there is an atmosphere of fear among the Hindu and Sufi Muslim communities. Human rights organization Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has expressed serious concern about the increasing attacks on minorities. According to the organization, incidents of communal violence are increasing as the national elections in February approach.
India’s strong reaction, questions raised on Bangladesh
India has also expressed displeasure over the treatment of minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh. New Delhi has clearly said that it is constantly keeping an eye on the situation in the neighboring country. Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in the weekly press briefing that ‘we are continuing to see a very worrying series of repeated attacks by extremists on minorities, their homes and establishments and business institutions in Bangladesh. It is necessary to deal with such communal incidents with strictness and prompt action.
He also warned that the tendency to avoid these attacks by citing personal rivalry or political reasons is dangerous. ‘We have also seen a worrying trend of linking such incidents to personal grudges, personal enmity, political differences or other external reasons. Such ignorance only emboldens extremists and perpetrators of such crimes and further deepens the feeling of fear and insecurity among minority communities.
Bangladesh government’s stance
At the same time, the head of the interim government of Bangladesh and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohammad Yunus has accused India of exaggerating the scale of violence. However, the ground situation and continuously emerging incidents are raising serious questions on the security of minorities.
