EXPLAINER: What is hit wicket out? Batsman loses wicket due to this mistake, know everything related to it including rules

What Is Hit Wicket Out: Cricket is a game surrounded by rules and the rules themselves make it even more popular. Actually, a batsman can get out in 11 ways in cricket. But, in this, hit wicket is the strangest way for a batsman to get out. Because, in this the batsman loses his wicket not because of the ability of the bowler but because of his own mistake. Actually, in IPL 2026, Gujarat Titans’ opening batsman Sai Sudarshan took wickets in 2 consecutive matches, after which the discussion has started. So let us tell you in detail about hit wicket in this article…

What is hit wicket?

In the game of cricket, a batsman can be out in a total of 11 ways, one of which is hit wicket. Hit wicket is a unique way of getting out. In fact, when a batsman, while playing a shot (attempting to take a shot) or while running to take a run, unknowingly knocks down his wicket (balls/balls or stumps) with his own bat, body or clothes, then he is declared out as ‘hit wicket’ and the batsman has to return back to the pavilion.

When is hit wicket considered OUT?

  • The batsman must drop his stumps after the bowler has bowled the ball and while attempting to play a shot.
  • Hits your wicket while starting the run to score runs or while taking the first run.
  • The bat, helmet, gloves or any part of the body may hit the stump and cause the bails to fall.

When is a hit wicket not considered out?

  • If the batsman hits the stump due to contact with the wicketkeeper, fielder or bowler.
  • If the stump falls due to any reason unrelated to playing the ball or taking runs.
  • If the ball has been declared dead ball.
  • If the ball has been declared wide and the batsman’s bat hits the stumps, then it is not considered out because it is a ‘dead ball’.
  • The rule of non-striker batsman being hit wicket does not apply.

Sai Sudarshan hit wickets twice back to back

Qualifier 2 was played between GT VS RR on Friday at Maharaja Yadvinder Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur. Sudarshan was batting brilliantly in this match. Brajesh Sharma came to bowl in the 13th over of Gujarat’s innings. After the fifth ball quickly crossed the boundary, but at the same time Sai’s bat slipped from his hand and fell straight on the stumps. The umpire immediately gave him hit-wicket out.

Earlier in the RCB VS RR match, Sai Sudarshan was out ‘hit wicket’ in a very unfortunate manner in IPL Qualifier 1. While playing the shot, the bat slipped from his hand and fell on the stumps, due to which he had to return to the pavilion. Yes, Jacob Duffy came to bowl the third over in front of GT, where Sai Sudarshan returned to the pavilion on the third ball of the over due to his mistake.

Batsmen with most hit wicket dismissals in T20 cricket

An unwanted record has been registered in the name of Sai Sudarshan. This opening batsman of Gujarat Titans has become the third player to be dismissed the most number of hit wickets (3 times) in the history of T20 cricket. Andre Russell and Shoaib Malik are also included in this list. The special thing is that all three hit-wickets of Sudarshan have come in IPL only.

What did Sai Sudarshan say after getting hit wicket?

Gujarat Titans opener Sai Sudarshan reacted to his hit wicket dismissal. He said, I think I should try some things. I will just try some grip techniques and hit some balls with the bat and see how it goes. Really. In the last match, the ball bounced a few times and hit the stumps. But in this match, I think I wanted the ball to go straight.

What are the main technical reasons for being hit wicket?

  • Standing too close to the stumps. Some batsmen stand too close to the off or leg stump while taking guard. Even a slight movement backwards while playing a shot can cause him to hit the stump.
  • Losing head and body balance while playing a shot is called “losing shape” in coaching language. When body control deteriorates, the batsman unknowingly drops the wicket.
  • Loss of balance while going on back-foot. The batsman moves back on a bouncer or short ball. If his weight is not controlled, his foot may hit the stump.
  • Going too deep into the crease. Against spinners the batsman sometimes goes too far back inside the crease. While playing a sweep or cut shot, the foot may hit the stump.
  • The bat hitting the stump while playing a big swing. While playing big shots in T20 cricket, the batsman’s bat goes back and drops the bails in follow-through.
