What is QUAD Fellowship? Explore eligibility criteria, benefits, application process

New Delhi: The 2024 QUAD Leaders Summit, held in Wilmington, Delaware, holds special significance for international students, as the participating countries have pledged to offer more scholarships and fellowships. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a total of 50 QUAD scholarships, valued at USD 500,000, for students from the Indo-Pacific region. These scholarships will be available exclusively to those pursuing a four-year undergraduate engineering program at any Government of India-funded technical institution.

The leaders also committed to QUAD fellowships aimed at fostering a new generation of interdisciplinary leaders by bridging the fields of science, technology, and policy. They welcomed the second cohort of QUAD Fellows through the Institute of International Education (IEE). For the first time, the governments have decided to extend this fellowship to students from ASEAN countries, including Myanmar, Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Additionally, the Japanese government has offered support for QUAD Fellows to pursue their studies in Japan.

What is QUAD Fellowship?

The Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QUAD) was established by Australia, India, Japan, and the United States to address regional security concerns and humanitarian issues. In 2021, these governments launched the QUAD Scholarship Program with the goal of fostering connections among the next generation of leaders. Since 2024, the Institute of International Education (IIE) has been vested with the responsibility of managing the fellowship.

QUAD Fellowship eligibility criteria

  • Aspirants must be at least 18 years of age to apply for this fellowship
  • One must be a citizen of Australia, India, Japan or the US, or 10 ASEAN countries
  • Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in a STEM field
  • Candidates must note that they cannot apply to this fellowship to pursue clinical healthcare degree programs.

  • Financial benefits: The shortlisted candidates will receive a one-time stipend of $40,000 for academic expenses.
  • Programming: Quad Fellows can increase their network and engage in programming in STEM, government, and society.

QUAD Fellowship application process

Interested candidates who meet all the eligibility criteria set by the IIE must apply online through the official portal at quadfellowship.org. Candidates must send at least three essays and three letters of recommendation. One must note that at least two letters of recommendation must come from professors. After this, an expert review will take place to assess proficiency in the STEM field. The final-round panel interview will assess aspirants on multiple parameters including STEM, social impact and others.
