Nirupa Roy, one of our cinema’s most iconic actresses, remains forever etched in the hearts of audiences for her unforgettable portrayal of the quintessential mother. While many actresses have played the role of a mother, Nirupa Roy’s emotional depth and character set her apart. The powerful line from Yash Chopra’s Deewaar“I have a mother.” – has become one of the most iconic dialogues in Bollywood history. The phrase, filmed on Nirupa Roy, continues to resonate with audiences and remains a symbol of her legacy in Indian cinema.

Nirupa Roy's Real Name

Nirupa Roy was born as Kanta Chauhan and she adopted the name Nirupa Roy when she entered the film industry. At the age of just 15, she married Kamal Roy, a ration inspector who encouraged her to pursue acting. However, when her father found out about her decision to join the film industry, he was furious and broke all ties with her, never speaking to her again.

Despite this emotional setback, Nirupa Roy remained undeterred and she became one of the most sought-after actresses of her time, working alongside some of the biggest names in the industry, including Amitabh Bachchan, Dev Anand, Shashi Kapoor, and Dilip Kumar.

Complicated Real-Life Relationships

While Nirupa Roy’s on-screen roles often depicted her as a self-sacrificing, sorrowful mother, her real-life relationships were more complicated. In 2001, her daughter-in-law filed a police complaint accusing Nirupa Roy and her husband of dowry harassment and black money possession. The allegations shook the film industry, and Nirupa Roy faced the possibility of arrest. However, after a thorough investigation, no evidence was found to support the claims, and the charges were dismissed.

A few years later, another controversy emerged when a video surfaced showing her sons involved in a bitter property dispute. This footage added to the strain on her personal life. Sadly, Nirupa Roy passed away in 2004 at the age of 73 due to a cardiac arrest. Rumours circulated that her death was precipitated by the emotional toll of the ongoing conflict over her property.

Despite the challenges she faced, Nirupa Roy’s legacy as the epitome of maternal love in Indian cinema continues to live on.
