What is the difference between BS4 and BS6 vehicles? Know these rules before driving in Delhi

In view of the increasing air pollution in Delhi, the government has taken strict steps regarding vehicles. From December 18, only BS6 standard vehicles will be allowed to enter Delhi. This means that BS3 and BS4 vehicles registered outside Delhi will no longer be able to ply on the roads of the capital. Actually, this decision has been taken to reduce pollution and provide clean air to the people.

BS means Bharat Stage Emission Standards, which decide how much pollution a vehicle will emit. BS4 are vehicles falling under the old rules, while BS6 is based on new and more stringent rules. The aim of BS6 rules is to reduce the toxic smoke emitted from vehicles to a great extent. Fuel used in BS4 vehicles has higher sulfur content, whereas BS6 fuel is cleaner. The amount of sulfur has been greatly reduced in BS6, due to which the smoke coming out of the vehicle is less harmful. Apart from this, emissions of harmful gases like nitrogen oxide are also significantly less in BS6 vehicles. This difference is even more visible in diesel vehicles.

Many new technologies are installed in BS6 vehicles, which help in controlling pollution. These are equipped with special filters and sensors, which clean the smoke and also see that the vehicle is not polluting more than the prescribed limit. However, to run these vehicles properly, it is necessary to use BS6 fuel.

A large number of BS3 and BS4 vehicles are running in Delhi and surrounding areas. By banning these, the number of vehicles causing pollution on the roads will reduce. Experts believe that this will improve the air quality and people will get relief from respiratory diseases.
