What is the real importance of Kumbh in Indian culture?
Prayagraj. Tulsidas Ji has said — Magh Makar Gati Ravi Jab Hoi. Tirthpatihi Aav Sab Kohi.
Thus, the whole of Magh was bathed. Again all go to their own ashrams. Tulsi Baba does not write anywhere that Magh bath in Prayagraj gets rid of sins or washes away all sinful deeds.
The Buddhist philosopher Dharmakirti has struck a powerful blow against superstitions such as the washing away of sins and attainment of merit by bathing in holy places in the first chapter of the Pramanavartika — The five signs of destroyed wisdom are the beginning of sorrow and the loss of sin, O foolishness. (That is, to consider the Vedas as proof, to call a God the doer, to associate bathing with religion, to be proud of caste, to torment the body to destroy sin, these are the five signs of inertia)
Kabir Saheb's sarcasm on pilgrimage bathing is also sharp, while addressing the women he has said – “Ganga is nahine, Yamuna is nahine, nine hearts are covered with milk. Paanch twenty-five ke dhakka khine, gharhu ki kapitali aayi gamay.” Kabir Das has also said – “Ganga Gomti bathes, the bulls remain.”
The basic purpose of the Kumbh practice was to celebrate the spiritual festival in which scholars, philosophers and seekers gathered in one place to communicate with each other, debate the scriptures and the earth was blessed by their advice, penance power and accumulated spiritual wealth .—(“Where is the earth, which is favored by the association of the best and the greatest, by the precepts of his welfare, in which he is the Aquarius)
In Aquarius, the pursuit of immortality means following the ten limbs of Dharma with complete devotion. According to our scriptures, there are ten parts of religion, patience, forgiveness, restraint, stealth, purity, restraint of the senses, intelligence, knowledge, truth and anger—(“Dhriti, forgiveness, restraint, stealth, cleanliness, restraint of the senses.
Gandhiji has written on the Kumbh Mela – “In 1915, there was a Kumbh Mela in Haridwar. I had no desire to go to it. But I had to go to see Mahatma Munshiram ji. On the occasion of Kumbh, Gokhale's India- Sevak Samaj had sent a big group and it was decided that I should take my group to Haridwar before me. I also met him after returning from Rangoon.
In those days I had enough energy to move around. So I was able to move around a lot. During this trip, I saw more of people's madness, their fickleness, their hypocrisy and their chaos than their religious sentiments. Only a crowd of sadhus had gathered. It seemed as if he was born only to eat Malpua and Kheer.”
If saints, ascetics and ascetics gather in Kumbh, through their moral and spiritual strength, they open new horizons of knowledge and science for human welfare and alert the government and administration about their responsibilities. If we spread new consciousness in the society and inspire Indians to move forward on the path of purification, wisdom and welfare of the entire society, then the tradition of Kumbh should definitely be preserved.
If Kumbh causes communal frenzy, anti-socialism, spread of filth and disease, promotes hypocrisy, harms the environment, defames religion, paves the way for the rule of corrupt rulers, then cherish this tradition. Keeping it cannot benefit anyone.
