Apart from this, the flow of some holy rivers also started from here, which are considered as holy and clean even today as they were earlier. According to religious belief, when Mother Ganga first came to earth, she was seated in the locks of Lord Shiva, after which she merged with the flow of various rivers on earth, which is called Sangam. There are five such Prayags, where Ganga meets different rivers.

Ganga river is considered the most sacred in Hindu religion. According to religious beliefs, the five Prayags of Uttarakhand are not just a confluence, but symbolize many mythological stories. When the Alaknanda River met five different rivers in Uttarakhand, five sacred confluences were formed. The names of these five confluences are Vishnuprayag, Nandprayag, Karnaprayag, Rudraprayag and Devprayag. Now the question arises that what is the mythological story of the confluence of these five rivers.

Mythological story related to Panch Prayag

1. Vishnuprayag

Vishnuprayag is in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, where devotees go during the Chardham Yatra and take a dip in the river with full devotion. Vishnuprayag is the confluence of Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers. It is believed that by taking bath here all the sins of the devotees are eradicated. For this reason, many devotees take a dip here after visiting Badrinath Dham.

The legend associated with this place is that here Narada Muni performed rigorous penance for Lord Vishnu. Pleased with his penance, Lord Vishnu appeared here. For this reason this confluence is called Vishnuprayag. According to many religious beliefs, Lord Vishnu still resides here.

2. Nandprayag

The confluence of Alaknanda and Nandakini rivers can be seen in Nandprayag. It is also situated in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. According to the mythology associated with this place, King Nand lived here, who had no children. To have a child, he did penance to Lord Vishnu for many years. Pleased with his penance, Lord Vishnu blessed him with a child. Since then this place came to be called Nandprayag.

3. Karnaprayag

Karnaprayag is the confluence of Alaknanda and Pindar rivers. The mythological story of this place is linked to Mahabharata. It is believed that the hero Karna of Mahabharata had performed rigorous penance for Sun God here, due to which Sun God was pleased and gave him armor and earrings. For this reason this confluence is called Karnaprayag.

4. Rudraprayag

Rudraprayag is the confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. According to mythology, Lord Shiva took the form of Rudra here. It is said that Narad Muni performed rigorous penance for Lord Shiva here, after which Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Rudra and performed the Tandava dance. This Sangam is situated near Kedarnath Dham, hence its religious importance increases even more.

5. Devprayag

Devprayag is located in Tehri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand. Here the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers occurs, and from here the actual form of river Ganga begins. According to the mythology associated with this Sangam, Lord Rama came here after conquering Ravana. He performed penance here in the form of Lord Vishnu. Therefore this place is called Devprayag.
