How to worship Vat Savitri Vrat?

On the day of Vat Savitri fast, women should take bath in the morning. Saree should be worn especially on this day. After this, the banyan tree should be worshiped as per the rituals. Kalava should be tied on the tree during the puja. Then offer roli, rice, flowers and water to the tree. After this, revolve around the tree 7 times. The time of worship today from 7 am to 11 am will be considered auspicious.

Story of Vat Savitri Vrat

There was a time when a king named Ashwapati ruled the country of Madra. A few years after marriage, a daughter was born to them. The daughter was named Savitri. When Savitri became marriageable, King Ashwapati fixed her marriage with a young man named Satyavan.

Narad ji did not like this relationship. Then Narad ji told King Ashwapati that Satyavan is very young, hence it would not be right to get this marriage done. After this, Ashwapati asked Savitri ji to break the relationship, but Savitri ji did not listen to her father. After this, Ashwapati got Savitri and Satyavan married as per the rituals.
Satyavan’s father was King Dyumatsena, whose throne was snatched away by his enemies. He had also lost his eyesight. Because of this the whole family started living in the forest. Satyavan also lived in the forest to serve his parents and Savitri ji also started living there with her husband.

One day Narad went to Lord Savitri’s house and said that Satyavan’s life had come to an end and the time of his death had come. Hearing this, Savitri ji became sad. She had kept a fast for the long life of her husband. At the same time, Satyavan started having headache and Yamraj started taking his soul towards the south direction. After this Savitri ji started following Yamraj. Seeing this, Yamraj said that nothing can be done now, you go back. Then Savitri ji said, ‘I am fulfilling my husband’s duty. Wherever my husband goes, I will also go there.

Hearing this, Yamraj became happy and asked Savitri ji to ask for a boon. Then Savitri ji asked for the eyesight of her mother-in-law and father-in-law. Yamraj fulfilled his wish. Even after this, Savitri ji continued following Yamraj. Then Yamraj again asked to ask for a boon. This time Savitri ji asked for the boon of 100 children. Then Yamraj, seeing Savitri’s devotion and dedication to his husband, revived Satyavan. According to religious belief, Vat Savitri fast is considered successful only when women listen to this fast story.
