What is UAN and how can you check it online? A step-by-step guide
New Delhi: The full form of UAN is the Universal Account Number. It is a 12-digit unique number which is given to every employee under the umbrella of the EPF. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) generates and allots the UAN. The UAN of an employee remains unchanged throughout his/her work life.
The UAN is like a social security number for EPF accounts and it remains the same throughout one’s career irrespective of job changes. Every time an employee changes jobs, the EPFO gives a new EPF account which is linked to the UAN. An employee can request a new member ID by submitting the UAN to the new employer and it will get linked to the UAN. All the member IDs are linked to the UAN of the employee to facilitate easy EPF transfers and withdrawals.
