Blood pressure is measured in two numbers. Systolic (upper) and diastolic (lower). Generally 120/80 mmHg is considered ideal, but it does not remain the same at every age.

Children (6–12 years)

Normal BP in this age group is considered to be approximately between 90/60 to 110/70 mmHg. BP in children is usually low and there is no need to worry much about it, unless there are any unusual symptoms.

Adolescents (13–18 years)

At this age, BP 100/70 to 120/80 mmHg is considered normal. Slight fluctuations may occur due to hormonal changes.

Youth (19–35 years)

At this age, BP ranging from 110/70 to 120/80 mmHg is ideal. If BP continues to remain around 130/80 then caution should be taken.

Middle age (36–55 years)

At this age, BP ranging from 120/80 to 130/85 mmHg can be considered normal. Stress, diet and lifestyle have a big impact on it.

Senior Citizen (above 56 years)

In this age group, BP from 130/85 to 140/90 mmHg is considered acceptable, but if it exceeds this, doctor’s advice is necessary.

When to understand the alarm bells?

If BP consistently remains above 140/90 mmHg, it may indicate high blood pressure. At the same time, very low BP (below 90/60) can also cause weakness, dizziness and other problems.
